It was profound sadness, the passing of ViceAdmiral Asaf Humayun, HI(M),(Retd) on 28thJune 2024. He was a distinguished officer of thePakistan Navy, whose career was marked byexemplary service, leadership, and anunwavering commitment to his country.Born in Hyderabad, Sindh, Vice Admiral Humayun's journey began with his earlyeducation in Nawabshah. His academic excellencewas evident from an early age, standing second in overall merit in hisHigher Secondary School exam in 1970.
He then passed the entrance testto the Pakistan Naval Academy, joining the navy in December 1970 andcommissioning in 1973 . He got his training at the Britannia Naval College in the UK and joined the Submarine Service Branch, eventually commanding the submarines Hangor and Shushak. His strategic acumen led him toprominent positions, including the naval attaché at the High Commissionof Pakistan in New Delhi and commanding the ships Tippu Sultan and Shah Jahan.In 1998, he was promoted to Commodore, and from 1999 to 2000, he attended the National Defence University in Islamabad, earning a master'sdegree in Defence and Strategic Studies. His career continued to ascend ashe held the role of Director-General of the Maritime Technologies Complex at NeScom, showcasing his leadership in technological advancements. As the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Humayun's tenure was marked by significant contributions, including overseeing the PakistanNavy Fleet and participating in multinational naval exercises. His efforts were recognized when he was appointed the Vice Chief of Naval Staff in 2008.
Post-retirement, he served as a visiting faculty member at Bahria University in Karachi, where his knowledge and experience greatly benefited the academic community. He also contributed insightful columnson maritime security to Pakistan Today, continuing his service to the nation through education and public discourse.Vice Admiral Humayun remained a pillar of the academic community at Bahria University, contributing through teaching and his writings.
Furthermore, he was a beacon of generosity and compassion, exemplifying the true spirit of philanthropy by dedicating time, resources, and effort to improving the lives of others. His legacy of kindness and selfless giving will continue to inspire generations to come. Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun's passing leaves a void in our hearts.
